His comments came following the recent removal of popular News Anchor, Natasha Smith from presenting the NCN 6 ‘O’ Clock News due to her pregnancy.

The President said, “pregnancy is normal so let’s celebrate it and let’s be grateful we have pregnant women, that’s my position and I don’t mind if she’s on the screen or the radio, why not?”

He further stated that “the Government has not articulated a position but as far as pregnancy is concerned …that is a normal function of mothers how can you get children without being pregnant? We should start to accept pregnancy as something very normal.”

Various interest groups including the Guyana Press Association and local journalists protested outside the National Communications Network on Tuesday deeming the move by the company a violation of Smith’s rights.

A meeting was held with the management of NCN and the GPA and Miss Smith has since been reinstated.
