Timely response from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) managed to save the upper flat of a building at Lot 1-2 Hopetown Village, West Coast Berbice on Monday. The fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the bottom flat of the wooden and concrete building which is occupied by a 50-year-old woman.

According to 50-year-old Queeny Wilson, who occupies the bottom flat of the building, she was not at home at the time of the fire. The fire started at approximately 16:10 hrs.

She told News Room that she left to transact some business when she received a call from a neighbour via cellphone that her house was on fire.

According to Queeny, when she rushed back home, she found her house on fire, however, someone had called the GFS and the fire tender was already on the scene.

Luckily, the firefighters were successful in saving the upper flat of the building, she said.

Owner if the building is 75-year-old Lionel who is self-employed.

An estimate of the losses could not be determined at the time.

Investigations into the fire are ongoing.
