Even as the Government of Guyana and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are trying to curb the high suicide rate in Berbice through various campaigns, the county is once again faced with a suicide case.
On Wednesday (September 21, 2016), a 59 -year- old Cane Harvester, Bonarine Mohamed called Jerry of Lot 34 New Street, Cumberland, East Canje Berbice, was discovered hanging by a rope from the ceiling in his home.
According to information received, between 12:00 hours and 14:45 hours, the victim was seen consuming alcohol at his home.
However, at about 16:45 hours, he was discovered by his son, hanging by the rope.
Mohamed’s son, Adrian Kumar told police that his father was an alcoholic, who lives alone in a separate house in the same yard. The man noted that around 16:45 hours on Wednesday, he was passing his father’s home when he noticed that the door was opened and his father was hanging from the roof with a piece rope around his neck.
Kumar disclosed that he raised an alarm and alerted other persons but they were unable to cut the rope.
The matter was reported to the Reliance Police Station and ranks dispatched to the scene. The rope was cut by a rank and the man was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
