An 18-year-old domestic worker was on Thursday, October 06, 2016 placed on $60,000 bail for stealing a quantity of cash and jewellery totalling $750,000 from Valencia Ali of 19 Main and Pope Streets, New Amsterdam, Berbice.

Sasha Christopher of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate Court before his worship Mr. Alex Moore where she pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to the facts of the case, she was a part-time domestic worker at the living quarters of Valencia Ali. It was alleged that she had removed on different occasions a quantity of cash and jewellery which went unnoticed.

It was not until April 10, 2016, that the victim challenged the accused about the missing articles and cash for which she admitted to removing. The accused subsequently promised to and returned some of the loot amounting to $370,000, while her parents intervened and agreed to repay the remainder. However, the offer was not accepted by the owner and as such, she reported the matter to the police who after a thorough investigation charged the accused with simple larceny.

The trial started and concluded on October 06, 2016 when the magistrate found that a prima facie case was made out against her and as such, she was found guilty and sentenced to one-year imprisonment and ordered to pay $500,000 to the victim. Failing to do so, should the one year expire she will be required to spend another eight months in prison.
