President of the Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU), Mark Lyte has cleared the air on the hosting of the National School Championships, as well as the format that it will take when it is in held in November.

Lyte confirmed the Championships will be held from November 21-25 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

“Nationals this year is set for the Providence Stadium from the 21st to the 25th and we would be having all the districts participating this time around as well,” Lyte said.

With the announcement being made at the conclusion of last year’s championship that event would go to the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora, Lyte shined light on why the move back to the Providence Stadium where it was held last year.

“We had thoughts of having the event at the Leonora Synthetic track. Unfortunately, all the regions were not prepared in terms of getting footwear for their athletes so we had to shift to the Providence Stadium where they are going to be competing on the natural grass surface,” Lyte noted.

However, Lyte shared that he was pleased with the current preparation ahead of the event. “As normal, the GTU takes the lead whether the dates are fixed and concretised in getting the championships on the ground.

“As you can see across Guyana all the schools have organised their inter-house, inter-schools, their inter-zones, so everything is working for the running off of the championships, so we expect this year that everything to be on stream for the National Championships to be a success,” Lyte stated.

The championship is in its 56th year, and Guyana’s top youth and junior athletes will have a chance to showcase their talent yet again.
