GECOM Chairman to demit office on November 30; PPP concerned that meetings are not being held

The Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP)at its weekly press conference raised concerns that since Chairman of the Guyana Elections commission (GECOM), Dr. Steve Surujbally proceeded on leave, meetings of the Commission have not been held to deal with substantive issues.

PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee said his party has been reliably informed that Dr. Surujbally has decided to demit office with effect from November 30, 2016 and has proceeded on ninety days Annual Vacation Leave due to him with effect from September 1, 2016, at the end of which he will vacate office.

Dr. Surujbally, the General Secretary noted, informed the Commission at a recent statutory meeting of that body.

PPP says it understands that President David Granger and the Leader of the Opposition were already informed of Dr. Surujbally’s decision to demit office.

The Opposition party is concerned that except for one meeting to address administrative matters relating to the currently ongoing continuous registration, no other meetings have been kept.

In September the PPP had questioned how Dr. Surujbally would create the platform to make a seamless transition to his successor if he is on leave.
