The quick response from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) in New Amsterdam has managed to save a two-storey concrete building in New Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice just after 20:00 hours on Tuesday, November 22, 2016.

News Room understands that the building which houses the New Building Society (NBS) is also occupied by a family in the upper flat of the building known as the managers’ quarter. It was disclosed that the fire began in the upper flat of the building.

According to information received, 38-year-old Levida Persaud and her 9 and 11 years old children had retired to bed when they smelled smoke. She told police that she ventured out in the hallway and observed fire emanating from beneath a stairway.

This publication was told that the woman immediately grabbed her two children and exited the building and subsequently raised an alarm as neighbours contacted the Guyana Fire Service.

Luckily a team of firefighters arrived promptly on the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze.

It is unclear what may have caused the fire but the Guyana Fire Service are conducting investigations.
