Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous People’s Affairs, Valerie Garrido- Lowe in the Committee of Supply of the National Assembly, today announced that in early 2017 it is expected that consultations will begin in an effort to commence the revision of the 2006 Amerindian Act.
This is as the Considerations of the 2017 National Budget Estimates continue on day two.
In answer to the Parliamentary Opposition, the Minister said these consultations would begin as soon as the allocated monies are released and committed to providing a schedule of said consultations at the request of PPP MP, Nigel Dharamlall.
Justifying a $19M increase in allocation to that Ministry, Garrido-Lowe said this is to facilitate National events.
From the total of $210M, $76M would be used for the hosting of Heritage Month celebrations and the remaining amount for other activities, the Minister told the Committee of Supply.
The over $990M budgeted under Current Expenditure has been approved.
