It was just about noon that the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) received a call that a house was on fire in Cummings Lodge. The upper flat of the Lot 328, 5th Street, South East Cummings Lodge house was gutted.

No one was at home when the fire started at the property which houses three families inclusive of some tenants.

News Room was told that Roopnarine Sookram is the owner of the house and resides upstairs with his daughter while he has tenants living at the back and another daughter living in the lower flat.

Today (Thursday, January 12, 2017), the residents came out in their numbers to see how best they could have assisted in fighting the blaze even before the fire fighters arrived. The Fire Service received a lot of praise for being able to contain the blaze to one building.

When the News Room arrived, several household items which persons would have managed to save were seen outside.

Statements were taken by the police and fire service from those who resided at the premises as well as those who live close by.

The house which was built some twenty years ago, was not insured.
