The Ministry of Social Protection today ( Friday, January 20, 2017) donated laptops, stationery and mattresses to students and other victims of the recent Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara fire that destroyed their apartment building.

Speaking briefly before the presentation, Minister Amna Ally said last Tuesday she met with some of the students and offered assistance in the form of meals, accommodation, transportation and other incidentals.

It is at that meeting that several requests were made for laptops, stationery and mattresses, since many of those affected were already offered accommodation. Minister Ally told those gathered that the Coalition Government is a caring Government.

News Room caught up with a few of the students, who expressed gratitude for the gesture by the Government through the ministry.

Minister of Telecommunications, Cathy Hughes, Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry and Director of Sport, Christopher Jones were also in attendance at the event.

The apartment building located at Third Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara which housed Indian and Cuban Nationals along with several students of the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) and the University of Guyana (U.G) was completely destroyed by the fire on Friday, January 13, 2017.
