The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) held yet another 15-a-side development game on Saturday ahead of the Sevens season, which is set to start next month. It was a day of intense rugby between the President’s select squad and the Vice-President hand-picked team at the National Park rugby field.

However, it was the Vice-President squad, who came out victorious with a 22-17 win in the tough physical and bruising match-up. The match was nothing like the weekend prior when the two mixed squads showcased speed.

This match was much more physical with a slow pace as both teams grinded for yards, especially out of scrums, a style national head Coach Kenneth Grant Stuart might like his squad to adapt. The players showed a lot of grit in the mixed match and it seems as though physicality was a key focal point of the match with the players making big hits on each other even a few shoves after plays.

It was Osei McKenzie who top scored in the match for the Vice-President team with two tries. Daniel Anderson and Carlton Barrow chipped in with a try each, while Kevin Wills scored a conversion.

Meanwhile, on the President’s side, Jason Tyrell, Rondel McArthur and Rickford Cummings scored a try each, while Ryan Gonsalves had a conversion. The rugby season will jump into high gear on February 5 with the start of the Guinness Sevens tournament at the National Park rugby field.
