The police and army are joining their resources as they seek to get to the bottom of a rape allegation made against three ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), placing the body in a very embarrassing position.
The News Room on Tuesday (January 31, 2017) visited the victim involved in the investigation who is said to be above the age of 16.
The soldiers who are being investigated are all from the GDF base, Camp Stephenson, located at Timehri, a short distance from the village in which the accuser resides with her family.
The young men are presently confined to their barracks by the Force and are not allowed to leave the base unsupervised.
The young lady and her mother were not immediately prepared to speak on the issue as the mother told News Room that the family needs some time to get over the trauma and also allow the police to do their work.
On Tuesday, both sides were back at the Timehri Police Station where the matter is being investigated. The three soldiers were brought to the location under the supervision of their colleagues where further statements were taken from them.
The GDF in a statement on Monday evening confirmed that they are investigating the report of rape against its ranks. The defence body also stated in its release that the matter has also prompted the GDF to establish a Board of Inquiry to look into the matter. The name of the person heading that Inquiry was not disclosed.
In closing, the organisation said that it remains committed to the “preservation of law and order” and will deal condignly with all transgressors.
