GUMDAC Open Doubles badminton underway

The Guyana Badminton Association started of the year with the GUMDAC Annual Open Doubles Tournament, which is being played for the fifth year, and is made possible by Darrell Carpenay, the Managing Director of GUMDAC, and also an executive of the association.

Breaking new grounds was national and Caribbean champion, Priyanna Ramdhani, who is competing in the Men’s Doubles events, and reached the final with Avinash Odit.  Priyanna’s move was due to a lack of competition in the Ladies division.

In the Men’s Doubles quarter-finals, Marlon Chung and Ronald Yuen defeated Tyrese Jeffrey and Akili Haynes 21-7, 21-10; Priyanna Ramdhani and Avinash Odit defeated veterans George Melville and Leslie Liu 21-11, 21-15; and Gokarn Ramdhani and Javid Rahaman defeated Stephan Murdilall and Haymant Ramdhani 21-9, 21-13.

In the Men’s Doubles semi-finals, Nicholas Ali and Jonathan Mangra defeated Gokarn Ramdhani and Javid Rahaman 21-18, 21-18; and Priyanna Ramdhani and Avinash Odit defeated Marlon Chung and Ronald Yuen 21-15, 21-16.

In round one of the Ladies Doubles, Priyanna Ramdhani and Greer Jackson defeated Emelia Ramdhani and Ayanna Watson 21-5, 21-9.

In the Open Mixed Doubles quarter-finals, Avinash Odit and Angelica Holder defeated Marlon Chung and Ayanna Watson: 21-17, 21-15; and Ronald Yuen and Pricilla Moore defeated Gokarn Ramdhani and Emelia Ramdhani 21-13, 21-12.

The Open Mixed Doubles semi-finals saw Jonathan Mangra and Priyanna Ramdhani defeating Avinash Odit and Angelica Holder 21-19, 21-12; and Nicholas Ali and Greer Jackson getting past Ronald Yuen and Pricilla Moore 21-17, 21-13.

The tournament will continue on Friday at 18:00h with action in the finals and third place matches, along with the presentation ceremony.
