Masters Academy kicked off the Milo Under-18 School Football with an impressive win on Saturday at the Ministry of Education ground in their debut appearance.
The new addition to the tournament topped Bishops’ High 3-1 in an up-tempo game that Bishop’s seemed unsettled in. Bishops’ however, drew first blood with a goal from Darin Chan in the fifth minute, but failed to defend the rest of the way, often breaking their formation.
James Walcott equalised for Masters in the 12th minute and then got the go-ahead goal for the first double of the tournament with a goal in the 48th minute after the first half ended 1-1.
Teon Vankenie ended any hopes of a Bishops’ comeback with a goal in the 48th minute that sealed the win. Meanwhile, North Ruimveldt and St Joseph High School battled to a 1-1 draw in game that had little creativity by both sides.
This would prove true with a nil-all first-half between the two sides; both never really finding any rhythm in their passing game. Jerren Shepherd would strike for St Joseph in the 61st minute, while Omar Sinclair’s equalised five minutes later to seal the game.
The other two matches scheduled for the day ended in a walkover with St Rose’s gaining three points from Houston, while defending champs Chase Academy got some easy points to start their title defence after Freeburg Secondary failed to turn up.
Games in the tournament will be played every weekend at the Ministry of Education ground from 11:00h.
