Maid who stole $3.2M for Christmas shopping gets $150,000 bail

30-year-old Gomattie Silos was on Monday arrested and on Tuesday charged by the police for stealing GYD$3M and US$1,000 during the month of December, 2016 which she reportedly used to brighten her 2016 Christmas holiday. Silos appeared in court on Tuesday (February 14, 2017) where she was charged and placed on $150,000 bail.

The News Room was made to understand that the woman was employed several months before the larceny by a businessman, Devindra Goberdhan and his wife to do domestic work. The couple operates a workshop.

40-year-old Goberdhan of Lot 9 Henrietta, Essequibo Coast, told the police that the money went missing between October and December.  He recalled hiring Gomattie Silos who lives a few houses away just a few months before the money went missing.

The businessman told the detectives that he placed GYD$7M along with US$5,000 and $4,000 Canadian dollars in a Black Hand bag in his wardrobe. The man related that he would make constant check just to ensure that the money was still there but was not counting it.

On December 19th 2016, he and his wife decided to sit and count the cash and it was then they discovered that G$ 3M and US$ 1,000 were missing.

After confronting the maid, they made a report to the police and the investigation commenced.  The suspect was arrested on arrested on Monday last and she reportedly told the police when and how she removed the money from the couple’s wardrobe.

She will return to court on March 30, 2017.
