Corentyne man granted $50,000 bail for brutalizing reputed wife on Valentine’s night

A Corentyne man was granted bail when he appeared in the Springlands Magistrates’ Court today (Tuesday, February 21, 2017) for allegedly brutalising his reputed wife on valentine’s night at their #72 Village Corentyne Home.

35-year-old Mahendra Herilall, who was unrepresented in court; pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh.

Injuries sustained by the victim during the incident

The court heard that on February 14, 2017, at his home, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded his reputed wife as to cause her actual bodily.

According to information reaching the News Room, on the day in question, the suspect and his reputed wife had a misunderstanding after he brought another woman he was seeing, to his home.

News Room was told that after Herilall was confronted by his reputed wife about the situation, he became annoyed and dealt her several lashes about her body after which he stood along with the other woman (name withheld) watching while Roopan bleeding and falling in and out of consciousness.

The matter was reported to the police the following day but the suspect had gone into hiding. However, he was arrested during the weekend and charged with the crime.

Herilall was ordered by the court to move out of the house he previously shared with the victim and to stay 100 feet away from her, pending the outcome of the court case.

He was placed on $50,000 bail following his court appearance and will return to court on March 20, 2017.
