Defending champions, Milerock were knocked out of the second edition of the Limacol Football Tournament when quarter-final action was played on Sunday evening.
Western Tigers made sure that the 2017 edition of the Limacol Football tournament will have a new winner by topping the Linden side 1-0 at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground. Milerock, who have been struggling for the entire tournament, finally met their match and never looked like the championship squad from one year ago.
Just one goal from Joshua Britton in the 57th minute was enough to send them packing. Also in Linden, Winners Connection edged Eagles FC 1-0. Rene Gibbon’s 62nd minute goal was all that separated the two teams in the quarter-final match.
The win by Winners Connection now means that they are the only team from Linden left in the tournament after three qualified for the quarter-final stage. Meanwhile, at the Victoria Community Centre ground, the Guyana Police Force topped Den Amstel 2-1.
Den Amstel made a positive start with a goal in the third minute from Kester Jacobs, but saw the lead evaporate almost immediately with an equaliser from Dwain Jacobs in the fifth minute. Quincy Holder went onto score the eventual game sealer in the 12th minute.
Jacobs spoke on the win, noting that it was a team effort and revealed that the squad just needs to stick to the game-plan in order to go all the way to the final of the tournament. The final game of the night was between Mahaica Determinators and Santos, with the latter ending with a 2-1 win.
Mahaica scored with a well placed chip shot from Eion Abel in the fourth minute, but goals from Dominique Bobb in the third minute of added time before the conclusion of the first half, and Orin Yard in the 77th minute allowed top seed Santos to prevail.
The semi-final of tournament will be on Friday at the Georgetown Football Club ground, Bourda, with Western Tigers facing Santos and Police battling Winners Connection from 19:00h.
