During the course of last night and this morning, the Guyana Police Force has placed another of its member close arrest.

This is as the investigation into the smuggling of an AK-47 assault rifle out of the Force Headquarters yesterday (Wednesday, March 01, 2017) widens.  Today (Thursday, March 02, 2017), a police source confirmed that the last rank to be placed under close arrest is a junior rank.

As it remains; out of the six members of the force who are presently being grilled by the major Crimes Unit for the unlawful act, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Denny is still the most senior of the lot.

Denny is no stranger to controversies and because of the many questionable actions which resulted in him being the subject of two serious investigations in the past. He is also one of the longest serving ASPs within the force.

Meanwhile, during the course of last night and this evening, the News Room has been able to acquire a photograph of the AK-47 assault rifle which was found in a civilian’s car yesterday morning as the vehicle was about to exit the Force’s Headquarters.

The photo was not officially released by the Guyana Police Force. The News Room was told by several senior functionaries within the organisation that the weapon does belong to the Guyana Police Force but all conceivable efforts are being made to ensure that thorough checks are made before this information was released to the members of the public.

Several years ago, it was discovered that several AK-47 assault rifles were missing from the Guyana Defence Force armory. Some of those weapons have been recovered and in many cases, those weapons were found in the hands of criminals during the crime wave between 2002 and 2005.

On Wednesday, a civilian was arrested after intelligence led to a search of his vehicle which was parked in the compound of the TSU overnight. When a search of that vehicle was conducted, the AK-47 rifle was found. A police corporal and several others including a corporal were placed under immediate close arrest
