Ganesh Looknauth, an overseas-based Guyanese had a gun placed to his head and his suitcases emptied by bandits who invaded his home located at Lot 23 Lancaster Housing Scheme, Unity, East Coast Demerara (E.C.D.). The incident took place mere hours after he arrived in Guyana on Tuesday evening (March 07, 2017).

The man was attacked by three men, two of whom he identified as his nephews. The third man was reportedly identified as a serial robber, also from the East Coast.

The News Room was told that the men pounced on Ganesh as he drove his vehicle into his garage, forced him into his house, took possession of his suitcases and demanded cash, jewellery and other valuables.

They managed to steal $3M, which the man had just collected as payment for a property he sold here, while he was still in the United States. Added to that, he was also robbed of US$3,000, a wedding ring, and a quantity of clothing and footwear.

After the bandits left the area, the man raised an alarm which led to neighbours rushing to the scene and subsequently calling the police. When the police arrived at the location, Ganesh implicated his nephews as the suspects.

He said that though the men had their faces partly covered with cloth, this was not done properly; he also recognised them by their voices. He added that the lights to his premises were all switched on during the course of the ordeal, which lasted for 20 minutes, making it easier for him to identify the persons.

The police, after taking a statement from the man, moved to the home where the two nephews reside, which is in another part of Mahaica. The police reportedly made two trips to the location and according to Ganesh, his sister attempted to hide her son from the police.

When News Room spoke with the woman she denied that her son and his cousin were involved in any robbery as they were at home all along.

She told the News Room that she and her brother are not sharing a good relationship as he had recently placed their mother in a nursing home without the consent of the other members of the family.

The police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
