Berbician teenager Romello Crawford created a major upset on Saturday, outsprinting reigning national champion Geron Williams to win the feature 35-lap School Boys and Invitational race at the inner circuit of the National Park. The day’s activity was sponsored by Demerara Distillers Limited, through its Diamond Mineral Water brand, and organised by national cycling coach Hassan Mohamed.
Crawford on Trojan PSL got the better of Williams of Continental/Foundation in a heated sprint on another heated day in the city. Another young rising talent, Stephano Husbands of Team Coco’s, rounded off the top three podium spots.
Completing the top 10 finishers were Shaquel Agard, Orville Hinds, Hamzah Eastman, Michael Anthony, Alanzo Ambrose, Raphael Leung and Silvio Innis. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the action switches to the road for the eighth annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial race in West Demerara.
The race will pedal off at 08:00h in front of the Wales Police Station, proceed to Bushy Park, Parika, and return to the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish, covering an approximate distance of 50 miles.
Team Coco’s Hamzah Eastman is the defending champion of the Open category, while Christopher Griffith had won on the junior side when the event was last held in 2015.
