    –          Guyana’s Men’s 4x400m record shattered

It was a good weekend for Guyana in athletics with some thrilling performances at the Penn Relays. Emmanuel Archibald and Natreena Hooper, both on National Sports Commission scholarships to the University of the West Indies’ Mona Campus, struck silver at the event.

Archibald leaped a distance of 7.47 metres to take silver, while Thomas Cheval of Oklahoma jumped 7.49 metres on his final jump to take gold. Hooper, during her performance, jumped 1.78 metres in the high jump for silver, while Courtney Avery of Lehigh University’s had a jump of 1.82 metres for gold.

Meanwhile, the quartet of Jermaine Griffith, Winston George, Alistar McLean and Kelton Cumberbatch broke Guyana’s 4×400 metres record at the mega relay event.

The quartet clocked a time of 3:09.00s to usurp the old record of 3:09.17s in a great run by the team that hardly trains together. George expressed that he was “happy” with the run as the athletes are looking to run themselves into form ahead of the World Championships.
