Opposition Chief Whip Gail Teixeira speaking during the May Day rally on Monday (May 1, 2017) said workers regardless of political affiliation are apprehensive and uncertain about their livelihood and the future of the country given the current declining state of the economy.

“They are confused and bewildered by the refusal of the administration to take the required measures to reverse the declining economy and more importantly the workers’ daily lives,” Teixeira said.

According to Teixeira the purchasing power of the working class has significantly declined with persons cutting back on spending, justifying the decline in the retail and other sectors. She noted that what is being witnessed is an increase in poverty and the Opposition fears with great repudiation a reversal of poverty levels prior to 1992.  “we believe that the decline in the economy can be reversed before it is too late and we want to point out, we are not making up the story but the unemployment levels are growing alarmingly

The PPP Chief Whip said, “we believe that the decline in the economy can be reversed before it is too late and we want to point out, we are not making up the story but the unemployment levels are growing alarmingly.”

In light of the many challenges being faced by the workers, the Opposition Chief Whip assured that the PPP stands in solidarity with them, urging them to organize and unite to ensure progress.

Teixeira said the PPP is willing to work as an equal partner with the Government for the development of the Oil and gas and other emerging sectors.

She pointed out too that this year’s Labour Day event was characterized by greater signs of unity and solidarity among the labour unions, which can only bode well for the workers and country as a whole.
