The closely knitted community of Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice was plunged into a state of mourning after the body of a well-known resident was on Tuesday afternoon (May 30, 2017) discovered in a rice field at New Forest, East Canje.
The body of the 64-year-old man, Hatim Khan also known as “Jackson” was discovered by a man who was working a short distance away.
According to the eyewitness, Michael Welch, he was several feet away working when he heard a loud noise. He disclosed that upon checking, he saw the tractor partially submerged in the rice field while there was no sign of Khan.
Welch recalled that he ventured to the location to investigate and noticed that Khan was pinned beneath the tractor and at the time he already appeared lifeless.
According to the wife of the deceased, Radikarani Khan, her husband left home at about 08:00 hours on Tuesday morning to tend to a friend’s farm. She related that her husband who operates a school bus in the area returned home to drop off school children before heading back to the farm at about 11:00 hours.
However, she received a phone call at about 13:00 hours informing her that her husband was found dead beneath a tractor in the rice field.
When the News Room arrived on the scene, several persons flocked the public road to get a glimpse of the body which was being transported by a tractor out of the muddy dam.
Investigations are ongoing.
