A 27-year-old woman appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (July 06, 2017) where she was charged for causing the death of 36-year-old Debra Pompey of 473 Bell West Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara (W.B.D.).

The woman, Tecona Welcome of 39 Austin Street, Campbellville appeared before Magistrate Alisha George.

The court heard that Welcome drove motor car PSS 7195 in a dangerous manner causing the death of Pompey on Saturday night (June 24, 2017) on the Liliendaal public road, East Coast Demerara (ECD). She allegedly lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the left side of the bridge separating Sophia from Lilliendaal.

She also caused injuries to herself and four other females.

Following the accident, a breathalyzer test was done and found Welcome’s alcohol consumption level to be 47 micrograms; that is 12 micrograms more than she is allowed to have while driving. For driving under the influence of alcohol, she was placed on $20,000 bail on June 29, 2017.

Welcome promised to return for her trial relating that the life lost is also that of her and friend and she is also grieving.

She was placed on $500,000 bail and will make her next court appearance on August 4. 2017.
