Man busted with 7,257 grams of marijuana in car trunk

The Police in ‘B’ Division are investigating a recent drug bust in which over 7000 grams of marijuana were recovered in the trunk of a motor car at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice.

The discovery was made on Tuesday (July 11, 2017).

According to information reaching the News Room, at about 23:00 hours on Tuesday, ranks from the Fort Wellington Police Station were conducting a stop and search exercise on the Fort Wellington Public Road when the discovery was made.

News Room understands that during the exercise, ranks stopped a silver Premio motor car bearing registration number PTT 7443 which was heading west along the said road. At the time, the only occupant of the motor car was 38 years old Andres Benjamin who was asked to exit the vehicle while the police carried out a search.

During the search, the driver was asked to open the trunk of the motor car to which he complied and ranks observed a blue suitcase and two 22KG bulky orange, green and blue Karibe bags. A further search was carried out on the suitcase in the presence of the driver, and one bulky parcel with male clothing and shoe wrapped in transparent plastic bags were found.

While searching the two Karibe bags, ranks found that one had inside two bulky transparent plastic bags containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana.

Benjamin was told of the offence committed, cautioned and escorted to the Fort Wellington Police Station along with the motorcar and the suspected marijuana which was weighed in his presence, amounted to 7,257 grams.

The driver is presently in custody pending charges.
