Police announced that an intelligence-led operation by ranks of the Joint Services resulted in one of the five remaining prison escapees, Cornelius Thomas, being recaptured at about 15:20hrs this afternoon in ‘C’ Field Sophia.

Thomas, prior to his escape, was imprisoned on a charge of murder at the time he made his escape from the Camp Street prison two Sundays ago.

An unrest triggered by inmates and a fire that followed allowed Thomas and others to go on the run.

The Guyana Police Force in its efforts to recapture the other four men on the run is appealing to members of the public, relatives and friends to give any relevant information as to the whereabouts of these escapees so that they can be captured and returned to the prison.

Also an appeal is being made to the escapees to surrender to the police or relevant authority, to avoid any serious confrontation that is likely to result in the use of force. All information will be treated with a high degree of confidence and also the rights of those escapees will be respected and upheld, the Police stated.

On Friday last, Desmond James, one of the escapees, who was imprisoned for murder, was caught hiding out in a shack in Canal No.1, West Bank Demerara.
