A former member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Charles Peters, 36, of an East Coast Demerara (ECD) community was this afternoon shot by ranks from ‘C’ Division.

The circumstances under which the man was shot were not immediately known.

The victim’s sister who spoke with the News Room at the hospital a while ago said that her brother is a father of two and is of an ‘unsound mind’.

She said that she received a call that the police picked him up but then received a subsequent call informing her that he was shot. It is not clear if he was shot in an attempt to flee from the police and what may have prompted them to arrest him.

Peters is said to have spent several years in Suriname and upon his return, he developed his present condition of being mentally unstable.

Doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital are this moment battling to save the man’s life. (Leroy Smith)
