Priyanna Ramdhani in Doubles QF at Pan Am Championship

Guyana’s top female badminton player Priyanna Ramdhani has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Doubles segment at the Pan American Championship in Canada.

Priyanna, who is a Caribbean age group champion, as well as the national junior and senior champion, is competing in the Under-17 level of the championship. Playing in Markham, Canada, the Guyanese teamed up with Sara Michelle Barrios Chiong of Guatemala to get off to a winning start in the Girls Doubles.

The pair recovered from a first set loss to close out the game with consecutive set wins against the Chilean pair Constanza Naranjo But and Belen Troncoso Mandiola.

Priyanna and Michelle, who are playing together for the third year, had a bad start, losing the opening set 21-23. However, they rebounded to level the scores with a close 21-17 victory in the second set.

Oozing with momentum and confidence, Priyanna and Michelle made light work of their opponents in the final set, cruising to a 21-10 success. With the win, the pair now moves on to quarter-final action on Wednesday with the hope of making the semi-finals cut. 

Meanwhile, in the Singles competition, Priyanna lost 21-19, 21-8 to Peru’s champion girl Inés Mendoza Rosell. The championship will conclude on July 28.
