A mother is now distraught after she found that her 1 year, 5 months old baby was raped while in the care of the father. The toddler is now in a stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

According to relatives, the mother who resides in Region 3, separated from the father who resides at Diamond, East Bank of Demerara, prompting the mother to summons the father for child support. As such, he is afforded time with the toddler.

Relatives on Monday evening told News Room that the father collected the child on Saturday, August 12, 2017 to spend the weekend. However, he telephoned the mother on Monday, August 14, 2017 requesting the child’s birth certificate and clinic card, stating that he needs to take the child overseas; something which she found to be suspicious.

Instead of handing over what was requested, the mother went to collect the baby and it was then she was informed that the child is at the hospital.

It is their belief that the father is aware of what transpired even if he is not involved; however according to the relatives, the father has refused to tell the mother exactly what occurred. At the hospital, the woman was told that her baby needs to be examined. Upon further investigation, she was told that the child was raped and has to remain at the health institution to be further examined.

It is the family’s belief that the hospital staff is not filtering sufficient information to the family since the father is employed at the institution. However, a source from the hospital disclosed that such cases are treated differently whereby only the relative who took the child to the hospital is allowed to stay with the child. It was added that the matter will eventually be transferred to the police along with medical records along with the samples from the baby.

When News Room contacted the Child Care and Protection Agency (CC&PA), it was noted that they did not receive a report on the matter.
