4 years jail, $1.2M fine for 5lbs marijuana

A 40-year-old Taxi Driver was sentenced to four years jail and fined $1.2M for the possession of five pounds of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Raymond Peters of Kuru Kururu, East Bank Demerara (EBD), appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

 

Peters explained to the court that he was going through financial difficulties at the time and decided to traffic the drugs for money. According to reports, the police acted on a ‘tip-off’ and intercepted Peters’ vehicle and found over two kilos of compressed marijuana in the backseat.
