Guyana’s National Under-19 team on Monday defeated Windward Islands by six runs to be crowned the 2017 CWI Regional Under-19, 50-over champions.

The title was even more prestigious as it enabled the Guyanese to retain the One Day title they won in 2016 and secure the 2017 double championship, after they also won the preceding Three-day segment.

Guyana won all six games in the 50-over tournament, prevailing over ICC Americas, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Leeward Islands and Windward Islands.

In Monday’s final round, Guyana batted first and posted 217 all out with the in-form Raymond Perez scoring a masterful 77 and Joshua Persaud a solid 40. Bowling for Windward Islands, Dillon Douglas took 3-32, Jahseon Alexander 2-24 and Alick Athanaze 2-34.

In reply, Windward Islands made 211 in 49.4 overs with Emmanuel Stewart making 48 and Wayne Edwards 43. Bowling for Guyana, Richie Looknauth took 3 for 31 and Bhaskar Yadram 2-35.

The successful Guyanese will return home on Tuesday (August 29) via the Eugene F. Correia International Airport, Ogle, at 14:00h.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Cricket Board said it “is extremely elated and congratulates the team on their remarkable feat of obtaining the double championship title.”
