The Guyana Police Force has confirmed that Camp Street prison escapee, Uree Varswyck was fatally shot during an operation in Linden late Thursday night and the hunt is on for the other notorious escapee, Royden Williams.
Varswyck and Williams were two of four fugitives who remained on the run after the July 9, 2017 prison fire and escape at the Camp Street prison. At 02:18hrs Friday morning, Police Public Relations Officer, Jairam Ramlakhan confirmed that Varswyck was shot dead and that a pistol, along with army camouflage clothing and a tear gas mask were recovered at the scene.
Ramlakhan said that the police operation was still ongoing at that time. News Room was reliably informed that Varswyck and Williams, were cornered by police in Linden and were engaged in a shootout, during which Varswyck was killed and Williams escaped.
News Room first broke the story on August 29 that 31-year-old Teon Allen, a former policeman, of Lobora Creek, Linden, reportedly confessed to detectives that he provided meals and transportation to the two wanted men following their break out from the prison.
Allen reportedly told the detectives that he moved Varswyck and Williams from one location to another. Williams was on death row for the Bartica Massacre while, Varswyck, who is also a former cop, was on remand for murder.
Allen appeared at the Linden Magistrate’s Court, charged with Harbouring of Wanted Persons and was remanded to prison after he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The News Room understands that Allen was arrested last week, after police received information that he was seen in the presence of the wanted criminals. The police source also confirmed that Varswyck and Allen were “squaddies” during their time in the police force.
