Investigations are ongoing into the suspected drowning of an 18-year-old miner of Leopold Street, Georgetown.

The police in a press statement said initial investigations revealed that Devon George, who was employed by Anthony la Rose, was at the time attempting to cross the Mazaruni River in the vicinity of the Poppy Show landing when the paddle boat which he was using apparently began taking in water.

It is alleged that persons in the area heard his screams and went to help but before they could have reached the location, he was already submerged.

The body was later recovered and taken to Georgetown where a post mortem was conducted by the Government Pathologist and the cause of death given as drowning, compounded by blunt trauma, the statement disclosed.

The incident occurred at about 21:50hrs on Sunday last. However, the information was only released after an inquiry was made to the police last evening.

Investigations are continuing.
