Guyanese man killed during Hurricane Irma in BVI
A Guyanese national is among those dead in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) after Hurricane Irma struck.
He has been identified as Derek Ragnauth, the cousin-in-law of former Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai.
Ragnauth hailed from Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
A local news outlet in the BVI reported Saturday that Irma claimed the lives of five persons thus far.
A string of Caribbean islands were left reeling by one of the most dangerous storms ever seen in the Atlantic Ocean.
At least 24 people were known to have died in the Caribbean as a result of Irma.
Many islands were still assessing the damage, even as they prepare for the arrival of another major storm, Hurricane Jose which has already strengthened to Category 4.
