Twenty-one-year old Kevin Richard Balkissoon and his girlfriend died this morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital, hours after a horrific accident at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara early Sunday morning.

Balkissoon, an electrician, of Lot 73 Haley Street, Worthmanville, Georgetown was riding motorcycle, CH 8732, heading in the direction of Georgetown with his girlfriend as the pillion rider, when it crashed into a parked forklift on the side of the road at approximately 02:55hrs. At the time of this death, Balkissoon resided in Hague, West Coast Demerara.

News Room was unable to confirm the identity of the pillion rider, however reports from Balkissoon’s family indicate that she hails from the North West District and does not have any family in Georgetown. The man’s family also revealed that she is a mother of three.

The victims landed in separate locations under a shop as a result of the impact from the accident. News Room observed that neither wore helmets and as a result, they suffered serious head injuries.

It took at least 10 minutes before residents in the area decided to take Balkissoon and his female friend to the Leonora Diagnostic Center. Residents were initially scared to move the unconscious victims and had contacted the police. They were transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in an ambulance as a result of the severity of their injuries.

News Room was also reliably informed that the young man was imbibing earlier in the night and was riding home in a drunken state. Reports also indicate that he is not a licensed driver.

The police took more than 30 minutes to arrive at the scene even though the Leonora Police Station is located less than five minutes away.

Editor’s note: This story initially stated that Balkissoon died and his girlfriend was in a critical condition, however we subsequently learnt of the young woman’s death and decided to update the story.
