Police depending on Intel to recapture remaining escapees

The police have noted that their efforts to recapture notorious prison escapee, Royden Williams is not only ongoing in Linden where he was last spotted but also at other locations across the country.

The alleged mastermind of the Georgetown Prison riot was last seen in in the Central Amelia’s Ward Area of Linden where his accomplice, Uree Varswyck was killed on September 1, 2017.

According to Assistant Commissioner, Clifton Hicken, while it is believed that Williams may still be in Linden, police are depending on intelligence. He told the media on Monday, “We’re not ruling out the possibility that he’s still in Linden and we’re not ruling out the possibility that he is not still Linden. It is intel driven and we have our operational postures throughout the length and breadth of Guyana, just in case.”

Williams is among three escapees which the police are currently trying to locate. Police stated that Williams, who was on death row for the Bartica Massacre, managed to escape on foot.

A police release noted that a 9 MM pistol with forty live rounds, a haversack and clothing bag containing medications, a gas mask, military camouflage clothing, toiletries and a cellular phone were found during the operation that killed Varswyck. Subsequently, an ex-cop was remanded for harbouring the wanted men.

The other missing escapees are Cobena Stephens aka OJ of Lot 82, Gope Street, Middle Walk, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, who escaped from the Camp Street Prisons and Paul Goriah who escaped from the Lusignan holding facility.

The police force had not only put wanted bulletins for the men but also offered an award of $10M for information leading to their recapture.
