A 21-year-old porter, who was allegedly busted by police with cannabis hidden in his pants crotch, was remanded to prison on Monday by Chief Magistrate, Magistrate Ann McLennan for the offence of drug trafficking.

Stephen Banwarrie of Triumph, East Coast Demerara, is accused of having 63 grams of cannabis in his possession on September 8,2017 at the Sherima Police Checkpoint, Cuyuni-Mazaruni.

The man denied the charge while his lawyer, Tiffany Jeffery told the court that her client has no knowledge of the drug. According to reports, on the day in question while at Sherima Police Checkpoint, the defendant was searched by police and the drug was found stashed in his pants crotch.

However, during police investigation, it was revealed by persons who were travelling in said vehicle with Banwarrie that he had pulled out the drug during the journey and was inquiring from persons if they wanted to ‘smoke.’

Police Prosecutor, Arwin Moore objected to Banwarrie being released on bail and cited the seriousness of the charge. The Chief Magistrate remanded him until September 28, 2017 and the matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
