Drunken driver causes death of pedal cyclist

A drunken minibus driver was arrested yesterday afternoon after he caused the death of a 66-year-old labourer of Farm Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara.

A police report stated that the 44-year-old driver of Soesdyke Back Road was proceeding south along Herstelling public road when Basil Rambarran who was on a pedal cycle allegedly rode across the road from west to east and collided with the front of the vehicle.

The incident occurred at about 16:45hrs.

As a result of the impact, the cyclist fell onto the road surface and was rushed to the Diamond Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The alcohol level of the driver of the minibus, BLL 4739, was tested and found to be exceedingly above the legal limit. He is in custody assisting with the investigation.
