Man killed in hit and run accident

An early morning accident on the Meten-Meer-Zorg Public Road on the West Coast of Demerara Wednesday has left an elderly man dead.

News Room understands that the accident occurred just after 4:00hrs and the victim, who has been identified only as “Whitey,” ended up in a drain in front of Sheik’s Healthcare Pharmacy.

His body remained submerged until undertakers arrived just after 7:00hrs and it was only then that residents were able to identify him. Surveillance footage from the area revealed that the man was struck down by a Toyota Runx motorcar, which was heading in the direction of Georgetown.

The car’s mirror was completely ripped out and was found at the accident scene. The man who discovered the body, Andaz Majid, told News Room that he did not hear any impact from the accident but only discovered the body at approximately 6:30hrs.

News Room understands that the driver of the car PMM 321, resides at C Field Leonora, West Coast Demerara. He was arrested by the police later in the day and claimed that he was proceeding east on the roadway, when he struck an object.

The driver claimed that was not aware that he struck down a pedestrian. Police conducted a breathalyser test on the young man, which revealed that he did not have any alcohol in his system. He remains in police custody as the investigations continue.
