Miner remanded on drug trafficking charge

A miner accused of trafficking cannabis was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan on Tuesday following his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Cliff Obermuller, 33, of Fifth Avenue, Bartica denied that on September 16, 2017 at Mazaruni River, Essequibo he had 506 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor, Arwin Moore told the court that on the day in question, the defendant was sitting in a speedboat, which was subject to a police search, during which the illegal substance was found inside his haversack.

The Chief Magistrates remanded the unrepresented man until October 12 and transferred the matter to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
