Businessman killed, brothers shot during robbery in East La Penitence

Fifty-eight-year old Fazal Shaheed died while undergoing surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Sunday, after he was shot several times by bandits who invaded the house at lot 194 Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown.

Police reported that the incident occurred at about 00:45hrs; Fazal was self-employed and resided at Albion, Corentyne Berbice. He and his brothers, 50-year-old Talin Shaheed of Toronto, Canada and 53-year-old Shalim Shaheed of the USA, were preparing for a memorial service today.

The brothers were also shot and are said to be in a stable condition.  Investigations revealed that the victims and other siblings were preparing for the service, when the bandits gained access into the house via a door that was opened and pounced upon them in the living room area. They were allegedly relieved of their jewelry.

The two masked men discharged several rounds at the brothers before fleeing the scene. They were rushed to the hospital and Fazal succumbed about 02:00hrs; the others who received gunshot injuries to their abdomens were treated and admitted.

Police reported that several spent shells have been retrieved from the scene by investigators who are currently working on several leads in order to quickly bring the perpetrators to justice.

A male suspect from East La Penitence has since been taken into custody and is assisting with the investigation.
