Leonora youth charged with MMZ fatal accident

Twenty – six – year old Asif Azeez appeared before Magistrate Christel Lambert at the Vreed-En-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to render assistance and failing to stop after an accident.

Azeez of Seafield Leonora, West Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was granted $300,000 bail on the charge of causing death by dangerous driving and self-bail for the other offences.

He is scheduled to re-appear in court on October 31, 2017. The body of 61-year-old Mohamed Yussuff Ashraff, of 155 East Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD was discovered in a shallow drain at about 06:30hrs on September 20 in front of Sheik’s Healthcare Pharmacy, also in Meten-Meer-Zorg.

News Room understands had reported that the driver of the car, PMM 321, was arrested by the police later in the day and claimed that he was proceeding east on the roadway when he struck an object.

 

The accused claimed that was not aware that he struck down a pedestrian. Police conducted a breathalyser test on the young man, which revealed that he did not have any alcohol in his system.
