An Assistant Superintendent of Police was taken into custody Tuesday evening by agents of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) along Church Street, Georgetown in connection with a quantity of fuel markers.

Police sources identified the officer in question as Keith Williams, who is attached to ‘B’ Division.

The police rank was caught as a result of a sting operation by the GEA. He was arrested moments after he handed the markers over to an undercover GEA officer. The officer is presently at the Brickdam Police Station as the investigation into the matter progresses.

News Room understands that at the time of the arrest, no fuel markers were found on the person of the officer nor was any found in the car. However, the very car which was being driven by the rank, did make an earlier drop off of fuel markers to the undercover GEA agent.

After that drop off, the undercover agent requested some more markers and it was while the vehicle was en-route to make the pick up that the car was intercepted.

News Room understands that in addition to the charges which are likely to come his way for illegal possession of the markers, disciplinary action is also to be taken against him for being out of his Division without permission.

The News Room has confirmed that the rank did not seek permission before leaving his Division, in accordance with the Force’s Standing Orders.

This evening, the Head of GEA would not confirm or deny the operation that resulted in the arrest of the ASP.

However he did ask that this reporter send him an email with questions about the matter for a response on Friday. ASP Keith Williams is said to be one of the officers in B Division who works with communities as part of the Guyana Police Force’s Social Crime Prevention programmes.
