Cyclist dies in Essequibo accident

A 42 – year old man of Perth Village, Essequibo Coast is now dead after he was struck by a minibus on Saturday morning.

He has been identified as Mahendra Dyal.

Police said they are investigating the incident which occurred about 09:15h on Perth Public Road, Essequibo Coast.

Reports are that the minibus, bearing registration number BWW 2943, was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway allegedly at a fast rate when it collided with the cyclist.

Police said the cyclist allegedly swerved east from behind a moving vehicle into the path of the moving bus.

As a result of the impact, the cyclist who received severe injuries was rushed to the Suddie Hospital. He was treated and referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital but succumbed whilst being transported.

The minibus driver, a 27- year old Richmond resident, is in custody assisting with the investigation.

Police said a breathalyzer test was administered and no alcohol was detected in his breath. The body is presently at the Suddie Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
