Drunken cop released on $80K bail following accident

A Police Constable attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) was on Tuesday charged with four traffic-related offences in relation to an accident which occurred on Sunday, October 1 along the Ruimveldt Public Road.

Nigel Griffith, 20 of Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he denied all the charges.

Griffith was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, driving an unlicensed motor vehicle and driving an uncertified motor vehicle.

His Attorney, Sonia Prang told the court that her client had borrowed the car from his uncle. The Magistrate released Griffith on $20,000 bail on each charge and adjourned the matter to October 10, 2017. He was also ordered to report to the Ruimveldt Police Station once weekly.

According to reports, on the day in question, at about 14:30hrs, the Police Constable was driving along Ruimveldt Public Road in the motor car, PSS 4303 when he collided with a motorcycle, ridden by Gem Simone Hall.

Investigations revealed that the car was proceeding north on the western side of the western carriageway on the Ruimveldt Public Road, allegedly at a fast rate, when it collided with the motorcyclist.

As a result of the impact, the motorcyclist received several injuries and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she is in a stable condition. Police found that all documents for the car expired. A breathalyzer test was administered and the Police Constable was found to be over the legal limit of alcohol consumption.
