In a one-liner, the Guyana Police Force announced that Deputy Superintendent of Police, Lonsdale Withrite has been relieved of his post as Officer-in-Command of the SWAT Unit.

The Force made the announcement shortly after a statement was issued on Wednesday that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances which led to the armed robbery of Withrite.

When contacted by News Room, Police Commissioner (ag), David Ramnarine refused to say who will take over the post as SWAT Commander. He said to the reporter, “Do you need to know that?” News Room responded by saying that the “nation would like to know,” however the Top Cop disconnected the call.

A statement from the police force on Wednesday [two days after the robbery], revealed that Withrite was allegedly robbed at gunpoint of a Service Pistol, and a magazine containing sixteen (16) live rounds, about 21:00hrs on Monday, October 02, 2017 while on the Industry Seawall, East Coast Demerara in company of a female.

According to the police statement, the Officer alleged that he was pounced on by three suspects, one of whom discharge two rounds and relieved him of his motorcar in which the firearm and ammunition were in.

“Swift responses from several units of the Guyana Police Force led to the recovery of his motorcar on the Ogle Airstrip Road, East Coast Demerara a few hours after.”

No one has yet been arrested.
