A West Coast Berbice man is in a critical condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after he suffered severe burns about his body following a fire that completely destroyed his home on Wednesday, October 11, 2017.

The injured man has been identified as 53-year-old Jaikaran Sahadeo of Lot 99 Section D Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice. News Room understands that the fire started just after 01:00hrs while Sahadeo was asleep in the lower flat of his two storey wooden home.

The cause of the fire is unknown and the house was completely destroyed

According to information received, the fire started in the lower flat of the building which is shared between the injured man and his sister. News Room was told that neighbours rescued the injured man through a window as fire engulfed his body.

    Indira Sahadeo is now homeless

His sister, 50-year-old Indira Sahadeo told the News Room that she was a few houses away when she heard screams that the house was on fire.

She added that the fire service arrived some half an hour later without water and had to return to base to fill their tank before returning to the scene, however, by that time the house was completely burnt.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
