Students, toddler critical following Corentyne accident

A 4-year-old boy, students and several others are in a critical condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital following a horrific accident on the Letter Kenny Public Road on the Corentyne Coast.

The accident occurred on Friday, October 13, 2017, and involved students from the Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary School and the JC Chandisingh Secondary School.

Some of the injured have so far been identified as 4-year-old Stephan Pestana, 16-year-old Bernel Pestano and 20-year-old Shake Luke all of Ulverston Village on the Corentyne. Others include 16-year-old Melissa Albert of Number 43 Village, 19-year-old Niketa Corlette of Scotsburg Corentyne and Vernall Pestano of Wellington Park on the Corentyne.

News Room understands that at about 16:00hrs, motor car HC 5545 was heading West along the Letter Kenny Public Road when the driver attempted to overtake a car and slammed into motor car HC 6447, which was heading in the opposite direction.

This school boy received treatment at the Port Mourant Hospital and was released.

An eyewitness, who prefers to remain anonymous, said she was home when she heard a loud noise and upon investigating, the saw the horrific accident. The eyewitness claimed she saw one of the cars with four students in the back seat and ran to render assistance.

“Me and my son rush outside and help pull them out and give them water to drink, I took out them students from the backseat and he and another man help pull out the driver from the front seat,” the eyewitness said.

She related that the students sustained serious injuries to their head and feet and were rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital for medical attention. At the hospital, parents and teacher flocked the ambulance in which the injured passengers were in; they were transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Investigations are ongoing.
