A former member of the Guyana Police Force was on Monday remanded to prison on three firearms-related charges along with escaping from police custody.

Kwasie Maloney appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and was remanded until October 30, 2017, after he pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

It is alleged that on October 12, 2017, at the Route 44 minibus park, Maloney had in his possession a 9mm pistol when he is not a licensed firearm holder. It is further alleged that he had 19 rounds of 59×28mm of ammunition along with a spent shell.

Maloney was further charged with escaping from the Brickdam Police Station while in custody pending the three firearm-related charges.

The unrepresented man pleaded with the Magistrate to be released on bail but Police Prosecutor, Richard Harris objected and explained that the gun and ammunition were found in the defendant’s possession when he was searched by police on the day in question.
