2011 prison escapee captured in Suriname

A 43-year-old prisoner who escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison on June 11, 2011 was recaptured in Suriname by law enforcement officials there.

Rickford LaFleur at the time of his escape was on remand for Murder and Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking.

According to the police, he was escorted to Guyana earlier today and is presently in custody at the New Amsterdam Prison.

LaFleur called Rickford Williams or Rickford Sabola, Bragga or Rastaman was first arrested at a back track crossing on the Corentyne with two kilograms of cocaine and 600 grams of cannabis.

At the time, the man who hails from Smithfield and the Canje River, was wanted for the murder of Cleveland Hetmeyer, called ‘Water Dog’, 33, of High Dam, Angoy’s Avenue.

Hetmeyer was shot to death reportedly during a confrontation with the suspect and another man at an area called Silverballi Gutter, some 90 miles up the Canje River.
